Project: Day 1

We were spending 2 school days working on our project in class. Yesterday was the first day that we started our 2-day exam.

Firstly, I continued to work on the animation itself. I got a tablet from Howard and used it to draw some more on Flash. Then I used IMovie to convert the FLV files into AVIs.

I think that the new parts of the animation I did weren't as good as my old ones so I may end up having to remake them at home.

Later on in the day we conducted a focus group in which we showed people our inspirational videos. I chose to show an animated video by AlliKatNya on Youtube which was the insiration to make my animation on cats.

The video can be viewed here:

And here are some pictures of our focus group session:

I have now done 19 1/2 of my project:
3 hours of research
3 hours to make the character reference sheets (one hour for each character)
5 1/2 hours on the animation
3 hours on the storyboard
5 hours on the exam day

Project Working On My Animation

I spent another 1 and a half hour on my animation today and yesterday.

This is proving to be quite hard now and I'm unsure whether it'll be done in time to be sent to the examiners.

I have now done 14 and a half hours of my project:
3 hours of research
3 hours to make the character reference sheets (one hour for each character)
5 1/2 hours on the animation
3 hours on the storyboard

Project: More work on my animation

Today, I spent 2 more hours working on my animation.

It's coming along well but I still need to know how to change the files in to AVIs so I can put them into Ulead.

I have now done 13 hours of my project:

3 hours of research
3 hours to make the character reference sheets (one hour for each character)
4 hours on the animation
3 hours on the storyboard

Project: Storyboard

I spent around 3 hours making the storyboard for my animation project.

It took around 15 minutes to draw the boxes and place the lyrics in and 2 hours, 45 minutes to do all the drawings.

It was made over a period of 2 days.

I have now done 11 hours of my project:
3 hours of research
3 hours to make the character reference sheets (one hour for each character)
2 hours on the animation
3 hours on the storyboard

Work On My Project

Over the past few days, I spent around 2 hours making the first clips for my project animation.

I've done some simple movements but I cannot figure out how to change them to AVI clips so I can put them in Ulead VideoStudio 11 to add the effects which is quite frustrating.

I think I'll try and just make all the clips at home and then transfer them all into Ulead at school on the 2-day project day instead.

Here's a frame from the beginning of the animation:

So far, I've done 8 hours of my project:
3 hours of research
3 hours to make the character reference sheets (one hour for each character)
2 hours on the animation

Visit 2 From Rob of Saatchi & Saatchi

Today in our Diploma lessons, Rob from Saatchi & Saatchi, who had also visited last year, came in to talk to us about their "don't let your friendship die on the road" campaign.

First, we talked in a group about the campaign as a whole. I quite like the campaign, it is effective and a good idea but I don't like the radio ads, they don't seem effective enough.

After, we went to our computers and answered some questions that Rob had prepared. We did this in Powerpoint form and spent the rest of the lesson doing this. I wasn't really that pleased with mine since it didn't sound very professional.

After that, we showed Rob our presentation on WaterAid and he gave us his personal opinion and feedback. I was really pleased since he really seemed to like it so I feel more confident when it comes to presenting it to Ms Gammon.

Research For Project: Other Animation Programs

The final part of my research~

Other Animation Programs

Flash is most certainly not the only animation program available, there are many more usable animation softwares that vary from skills, prices and impact.

Toon Boom Studio 4:

Possibly one of the best animation programs yet. Made for animators, by animators and excellent for learning how to make cartoons.

Animationish

A more simple animation program which is great for lerning the basics of cartoons.

Flip Boom

A much more simple animation program made by the “Toon Boom” creators more for kids to use due to it’s simple tools.

After Effects:

One of the hardest animation programs to use but nevertheless, still an animation program.

Pencil:

Allows vector and bitmap drawings. Much like a combination of Photoshop and Flash. A great introductionary animation program.

Synfig

Great for lighting and camera effects.

CreaToon

Similar to Toon Boom but a little more simple however, bitmap images come in handy.

Toon Boom Digital Pro

Strictly for professionals only, an amazingly effective animation program.

Toon Boom Studio Express:

Unlike Toon Boom Digital Pro, Studio Express is an effective beginners animation program to use.

SWiSH

A great effects animation program mildly similar to Flash.

Ulead Gif Animator

Old school animation software, simple and uses the .gif format.

TV Paint

A very effective program and a professional one is also available.

Plastic Animation Paper

A brilliant almost-traditional software. Free trials and a professional version are also available.

Motion Studio

Only really useful for loops and slideshows as it can only write in .exe files.

Pro Motion

Close up pixel manipulation is what this program is used for, perfect for gamers to create sprites and pixel-characters.

Project: Character Reference Sheets

As part of my media homework, I was to make reference sheets for the characters in my animation and here they are!

Research For Project: The Basics Of Flash

Yesterday, I got some books from the library and did som more research, about half an hour this time:

The basics of Flash

The basic tools in Flash consist of things from basic drawing tools such as the pencil and ink to greater tools such as layers and motion tweens.

The basic drawing tools are just like any other drawing program; the pencil and paintbrush can be used to draw onto the Flash canvas whilst the paint bucket can be used to flood colours and the eraser to erase mistakes. More complex tools are introduced such as the pen tool which allows you to create smooth lines that contain anchor points which can make a line curved and options to just outline or flood a colour.

On top of the simple tools, more complex designer techniques are added in Flash, one of the most important being layers. Layers allow you to make images move and even just to be drawn on separate layers of the canvas therefore, you can make a background on one layer and a character on the other and then only animate the character as it’s on it’s own separate layer.

Motion tweens are defining two points on the canvas that require movement and then Flash attempts to animate it for you. This is extremely helpful if you want something like a person to run across the canvas. If told correctly, Flash may be able to pick up the motion tween and make the person run for you instead of you having to animate it each time the person moves.

Sound is also a very commonly used technique in Flash whether it be sound effects or music. Flash shows an easy way to add sound: by using layers. Not only are there image layers, but there are also sound layers. This means that you can have over one sound playing at once for example, a sound effect or voice clip playing over a song. Flash consists of easy to use methods that allow sound easy to add to a piece and Flash also comes with sample sound effects for you to try out.

Like all of the other Adobe programs, Flash has a number of keyboard shortcuts. Ome can include Ctrl+S to save a file, Shift+F12 to publish an animation and Ctrl+Alt+A to bring up the action buttons. It is easy to find these keyboard shortcuts because they are all stated in the menu. Keyboard shortcuts are great for getting things done fast and without having to open up several menus to find the right command.

Research For Project: The Origin Of Flash

Today, I spent around an hour researching the origins of Flash.

Flash Animation

The origins of Flash

Flash was originally created by Macromedia in the 1900’s but was later bought by Adobe in 2005.

It was first majorly used by John Kricfalusi, the Ren and Stimpy creator when he made a short internet cartoon titled George Liquor. After the success of George Liquor, Kricfalusi went on to make more Flash animations such as music videos, shorts for icebox.com and adverts. This led to a growth in popularity of the Flash industry and by this point in time, Flash cartoons were popping up all over the place.

Following George Liquor, a new Flash cartoon was introduced called WhirlGirl on February 26, 1999 created by David B. Williams. It was an extremely popular webshow about a girl living in the future and fighting for freedom (a freedom fighter).

In 2001, the first ever to-be Flash full-feature cinema film started production titled “Lil’ Pimp”. For unknown reasons, Sony eventually decided not to showcase it in cinemas despite it having a large budget and known voice actors such as William Shatner and Bernie Mac. Eventually, the film was released on DVD.

Since then, a number of popular cartoons have been produced using Flash such as Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, The Bobinogs, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi and Happy Tree Friends.

Flash is a commonly used program for producing online series such as Off-Mikes by ESPN, Animax Entertainment: Gotham Girls by Warner Brothers, Crime Time by Future Thought Productions and HomestarRunner by Mike and Matt Chapman. These are the popular shows created by actual companies but fanimations are immensely popular among the community as well.

Fanimations are animations made by fans based off a certain franchise. Popular fanimations include the forty minute movie, Nazo Unleashed by Chakra-X based off Sonic the Hedgehog, the ongoing Warrior Cats fanimation by SSSWarriorCats based off Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter and the immensely popular web shorts, Sonic Shorts based off Sonic the Hedgehog which are a number of hilarious clips put together by a number of different animators.

This shows that Flash is a pretty easy program to use as most fanimations are produced by people who only learnt to use Flash by themselves or from other’s tutorials and not by actually attaining Flash as a career.

This research was done via internet however, I'm planning on picking up some books at the library to do some more research some time this week.

Tomorrow, I'll go onto more research such as Flash used in actual music videos, other animating programs and more.

Project: Music Video Proposal

My Proposal
For my project I intend on making an animated music video with my own original characters. The characters I have created are cats for a story I intend to write one day, the main characters and probably the main ones I shall use for the music video will be called Shadow, Phantom and Lumina.

The program I want to use is Flash 5 since I have this at home and I have used it to do a fanimation (fan animation from a franchise) before and it is a professional animating program. I made some test flashes including a Wolf nodding it’s head and a cat blinking and then I went on to make a fanimation of Pokemon titled “Time Twist Introduction”.

Since I have to use non-copywrite music I will either use a track created in the media suite or I will use some non-copywrite music from YouTube’s AudioSwap system which is a list of songs that singers and bands have agreed to allow usage from other people for free. At the moment I am thinking of using a song from AudioSwap by the band Evanescence as they have a lot of free songs in AudioSwap.

I intend to make an animated music video as a future career interest I have is to be a cartoon animator. Through this project, two skills that I think I would gain include experience using Flash 5, it takes a lot of practice to animate smoothly with the right amount of frames and backgrounds so this should help me to improve on that. Another skill I will develop on would be drawing cats. I draw a whole lot in my spare time but it’s usually Sonic the Hedgehog art so it would do me some good to try animating something I don’t draw that much at the moment.

This is a screenshot from my first real animation using Flash, “Time Twist Introduction”. It’s a fanimation and can be viewed on YouTube via this link:

It will influence my final project as it was a hard-worked attempt at actually using Flash 5 and I’m still pleased with it to this day, I shall use it as inspiration for my current project.

This is a screenshot from my first animation I ever attempted to make back in 2006. Back then, I had no professional animation programs or art programs so I settled with drawing on Microsoft Paint with a mouse and making the pictures move using Ulead VideoStudio 6. It can be viewed here:

I think it’s safe to say that I’ve come extremely far since I’ve made “The Evil Of Nazo” trailer compared to my “Time Twist Introduction” but I still look back at this for inspiration and motivation.

One of my biggest inspirations to start animating was a YouTube series by a user named AlliKatNya who made a fanimation based off my favourite book series “Warriors”. One of her animations can be viewed here:

I really liked her style and smooth animation and it inspired me to try it myself and also partly to do a cat animation for my project.

Another Warriors fanimation is done by a team of animators named “SSSWarriorcats”. I think their animating is truly remarkable and it greatly inspires me! In fact, SSSWarriorCats and AlliKatNya’s Warriors animations were what inspired me to make that Pokemon animation. SSSWarriorCats can be viewed here:

My final inspiration is a Sonic fanimation titled “Nazo Unleashed” made by Chakra-X. It is about Sonic and friends fighting an evil hedgehog named Nazo. I truly love this animation and the fact that the animator spent 2 whole years on this is truly remarkable! The whole animation is around 40 minutes. 2 years spent on a 40 minute animation. This is why I truly look up to this animation. The original animation, “The Power Of Nazo” was done a few years back but “Nazo Unleashed” was a remake and a much better one at that, the whole animation is ten times better than the original one and you can tell the creator put a lot of effort into this.

Project: Music Video

For the 'Project' unit, I have chosen to make a music video in the media section.

The reason I chose to do this is because I enjoy making videos and using movie making software.

There is something I have decided to do differently however,I have decided to make an animated music video instead of a filmed one.

I have decided to base it off a cat book I have considered writing in the future titles "Forgotten Shadows" that I based of my favourite book series, "Warrior Cats" by Erin Hunter.

The main characters and ones present in the music video include:
Shadow: The main protagonist. A young cat that lives in the mountains and called upon by Elder Raymond to restore the five things that make the world.
Phantom: The main antagonist, the one who tore away the 5 things that make the world. He's plotting to stop Shadow at all costs, even if it means death.
Lumina: A young she-cat who lives at the mountain foot in a small cottage with her owners. She befriends Shadow half way through his quest and decides to travel along with him to help restore the world. She later becomes Shadow's mate but is then killed by Phantom.

I am planning on using the song "My Immortal" by Evanescence as it doesn't seem to be copyrighted and it will follow the ending of the book where the Shadow's mate, Lumina is killed by Phantom. It is very sad and fits with the story well.

In the half term, I will be making character sheets for Shadow, Phantom and Lumina, doing research on animations and making a storyboard for the music video.

Lesson on Myspace and Youtube

On the 6th of October, we had a lesson where we read a report on Youtube and Myspace from 2005.

It was a very long discussion, we talked about the article for an hour but I did however find it useful.

The article was about how Youtube and Myspace affects the lives of young people and I kind of agree with what they have to say.

There was a lot about people spending a lot of time on Youtube and Myspace and also some illegal stuff that's put on Youtube from leaked games to cartoon clips and I do see that this stuff happens a lot.

I do think that we talked for a bit too long though and people seemed to be getting restless by the end.

I did find this quite helpful though, I learnt more about Youtube and Myspace's origins and when they were first produced.

Campaign Brief

For our current project we were told to make an animation to inform people about the rights of children.

My group chose to do WaterAid to inform people about the lack of water. We used the UNICEF website to get information and ideas about what is going on in the world. The reason we chose to do it on water was because water is an essential and vital part of life yet many countries lack the simple ability to obtain it.

Inspiration to make animations came from Terry Gilliam, the Monty Python animator. Examples of his animations are as followed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMpXUd_kesA

This animation is meant to be humorous. Terry Gilliam does this by using people with odd-looking faces and colourful backgrounds. The voiceover is almost humorous as well which goes with the humorous idea of the whole animation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLfN9psJo_E&feature=fvw

This animation is probably supposed to be more humorous than the previous one. The animation is very simple and the faces are again very distorted to make them humorous.

Our second inspiration came from when we went to the Rodchenko & Popova exhibition.

The two are linked because they also do a lot of montages by cutting up images and putting them together to make collages kind of like how Monty Python makes his animations.

Media Exam (Report)

On the 30th of September, we had a Media exam.

The aim was to write a report about our previews to Inspire!

I actually found this easier than I thought because I pretty much new what to write and I was prepared for the things I intended to do such as the week before when I collected some sketches and comments from my group.

The writing itself was pretty easy and I actually found it hard to keep to the word limits!

I think I did quite well in the end and I'm pleased it's now over.

Teahcer's TV

A while ago, Teacher's TV came in and filmed and interviewed our Diploma class.

I haven't much to say really, it kind of just felt like a normal day to me because I didn't get interviewed but I though I'd post it anyway.

Some people (including the teachers) got interviewed about what the class is like and they might put it on TV!

I hope I see myself!

Fashion Show At The RichMix

It's a little late to be posting this but I forgot to at the time of the event.

On July 7th 2008 some of our Diploma class went to help organise an A level fashion show at the RichMix in Bethnal Green.

It was a very long day and tiring too but it was split into two parts.

The first session was from the start of school to around 4pm.

We spent the whole time setting things up: sticking art on the walls, helping set the area up, ect.

I found this very boring and tiring and I didn't much like it, I didn't want to go back to the second session.

The second session went from around 5pm to 9pm and I found this much more enjoyable.

It was really just making sure everything was ready in time and then me and Cheyenne were told to wait by the door inviting the parents and viewers in and tell them where to go.

This was more easy because we wearn't rushing around all the time.

In the end I think that it was a very succesful event and the show went extremely well.

The A level students were awarded an award for Best Denim by GAP for their efforts.

Edward Scissorhands Dance Workshop

A while back, two dancers from the Edward Scissorhands production called Jack and Vicky came to our school to teach us some of the dance moves from the performance.

We first did a number of warm ups including voice and action ones and then we went into actual dance moves.

We had to get into groups of two and I was with Cheyenne. We were then told to make up some dance moves that also represented what you would do at a BBQ.

Cheyenne and I had a nice mix of dance BBQ moves including eating, making a hotdog, playing volleyball and swimming.

We were then given some music from the performance and we did our dance moves in time to the music.

After that we showed our dances to the rest of the class and gained some helpful feedback.

I found the BBQ dancing quite fun, I enjoyed making up all the different moves and I quite liked showing them to the class but I didn't really enjoy the warm up. I found it tiring and hard to adjust to since we don't generally do many warm up's in our actual Diploma Drama class so I found this new and weird at the same time as being intersting.

Speedpaints

Here' are some speedpaints I've done showing how I make some of my art:

More will be posted when I make them.

Design Museum and Tate Modern

On the 21st of April, our Diploma class went on a trip to vsiti the Design Museum and the Tate Modern.

First, we went to the Design Museum to see an exhibition by Hussein Chalayan
called "Fashion and Back". He was a Turkish Cypriot so a lot of his costumes were based off his background such as using very loose dresses due to the hot weather in cyprus and dazzling cypriot materials.

As you can see, he used a mixture of soft colours such as cream contrasted with bright colours such as orange. This is a very popular thing in Cyprus as traditional dresses are generally red and cream.

He had a very unique style as shown in a variety of ways. One of his dresses was covered in bright red lasers and another was a section of dresses that folded up and expanded on the people wearing them.

He still lingered his home country within his clothes along with the colours and backgrounds he used on the outfits and videos shown.

We also had to sketch some pieces and I chose to sketch "Interia/SS/2009" and "Panoramic/AW/1989".

I quite liked his unique style and the fact that he made all his outfits seem different in a variety of ways.

After that, we made our way to Tate Modern to see the "Rodchenko and Popova" exhibition.

They used a wide variety of motifs to present the art in a Russian culture with architecture, painting, sketching and media.

I had to say that I was blown away by the huge variety, there was so much different stuff in each room that i kin of surprised me.

I liked a lot of the art here, preferably "Design for a Child's Dress" by Luibov Popova which I chose to sketch out.

I also sketched a lot of the architecture which gave me a good chance to practice my shading epecilly on "Spatial Construction No.25" by Aleksandr Rodchenko.

I also enjoyed this exhibition mainly because of the variety of different styles and medias used and I wouldn't mind visiting it again.

The National Gallery

A while back, I went to the National Gallery with my family for the day.

It was enormous and had a huge variety of artwork!

I saw a lot of famous paintings like Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Chair.

My favourite piece out of the whole gallery was Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) by Henri Rousseau:

I've loved this piece for years as I used to have an alphabet poster with pictures from The National Gallery and "T" had this painting for Tiger. My sister now owns the poster.

I had fun but I got a bit tired after walking around so much and sat down to read a book instead.

Woyzeck Performance

On the 13th and 14th of July, our Diploma class set to work for our final assessment of Woyzeck.

We spent the whole of the 13th setting up. Me and Cheyenne were in charge of music and sound effects so we spent most of the day with Howard downloading it all and then burning it to a CD. Supisingly, it actually took quite a long time and we had to get Corey and Rianna to help us choose the final track.

Once we had finished, we went back to the fishbowl and helped decorate the room. I wrote some words in my awful bubble writing and stuck them on the wall as well as cut out hearts and leaves to hang up. It was very tiring indeed and I was glad to go home after that.

On the 14th, me and Cheyenne instantly went to get the CD from Howard (which still needed to be burnt and took a great deal of time) but when we had finally finished, we continued to help with the sets, mainly cutting and sticking leaves.

The annoying thing was that me and Cheyenne locked our lunch in the fishbowl and we had to go to lunch late!

When the performance was finally ready, we decided that it might be best not to show it but just film it and sent that to the examiner.

I was in charge of music and had to play the correct tracks with correct timing whilst the actors performed.

I thought the performance was quite good for the short amount of time we'd had to put it together but I'm glad we didn't perform it on that day.

Bash Studios

On the 30th of June, our Diploma class visited Bash Studios to help prepare for the "First Date Widening career perspectives day."

I really enjoyed this actually!

I was assigned to refreshments (which is a suprise since I can't deal with food to save my life!) along with Cheyenne, philomena and Beth.

We started off by setting out biscuits, fruit, ect. and then we were shown how to serve tea.

It was extremely hot and kind of dangerous so we had to be very careful with it.

Once people started arriving, I had a great but tiring time serving tea and coffee to everyone and also telling them were to go and what to do.

The only thing I didn't like was the washing up. Apparently I was "disturbing people" when I was just trying to help.

All in all it was a good day. I served refreshments, we got our message across to the people and we also got some footage that other groups took.

Cake Sale

To raise money for our Woyzeck performance, our Diploma class organised a cake sale!

We spent the whole day selling and baking fresh goods and made a lot of money out of it.

Me and Cheyenne started off by baking cookies which took 2 hours and turned out aweful so we instead went on to making cupcakes instead which turned out much better (Even though I forgot to put eggs on one batch.)

We made a total of £85 in the end however we did spend a lot of it on ingredients. Overall though, this was a big step of money for our final performance!

The Summer Of Sonic 09

I attended the Summer Of Sonic 09 convention on the 29th of August! It was amazing! It was so great to see all these Sonic fans bunched together, it made me realise that I'm NOT the only one who likes Sonic (Because it seems that way at school...)

The reason I'm posting this here is because it was to do with art and textiles. I entered the fanar contest (art) and the cosplay contest (textiles).

It started at 11 but I got there at 2. First thing I did was get my pass and my hand stamped with "SEGA" across it I brought along my "Through The Fire" pic for the fanart contest so after I had come in, I went and posted it as a fanart submission.

By this time, the Sonic Archie comic people were doing a Q&A but I didn't bother to listen since only just started reading the Archie comics and well, I haven't even read a full one yet. So I looked around.

There was a ton of stuff, a cabinet with all this priceless stuff in it, rare Sonic figures, signed games and limited edition art books and there was also the same huge Sonic statue that I saw in the game shop in Whales! I'm not too sure but it might have actually been smaller here but never mind, it was still epic! They had a huge row at the back with Wii, PS3 and XBox consoles where you could play Sonic games! They were showcasing the upcoming game, "SEGA Allstars Racing" Along with SEGA Superstars Tennis, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Genesis Collection and Sonic Heroes. I only got round to playing Sonic and the Black Knight and I was very rusty! It was on the second King Arthur boss battle and I kept failing! But after me, a man tried playing it and he hadn't a clue what he was doing! So I helped him by telling him the controls and what to do. They also had a fanart wall with pics from the "Sonic and the Black Knight" contest, I think the people who entered were either at the convention, had given their permission or they were just all the UK ones.

I also changed into my Shahra costume for the later on cosplay contest. It was so cool, the male toilets had "Hedgehogs" written on them with a pic of Sonic and the female toilets had "Hedgehog-ettes" written on it with a pic of Amy next to them!

So once I was changed, I went and sad near the fanart corner where there was a huge table full of pens, pencils, paper, ect. and I doodled a Team Sonic pic as a warm-up sketch. There was this huge 'Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood' cutout and then I started sketching that out.

Whilst I was doing that, one of the best parts of the con happened, Bentley Jones appeared on stage! Everyone rushed over with cameras whilst he introduced himself. He had done an earlier performance but I wasn't there to see that one so this was the first time I saw him. He had previously been selling his latest album but I didn't get it because I'm kinda low on cash at the moment. Anyway, he came on, introduced himself and his guitarist and then sung "Dreams Of An Absolution"! I felt like singing along He also sung his version of "City Escape", "Final Night" from the new Nights game and 1 more song which I can't remember the name of. Anyway, I attempted to get him to sign my Sonic 06 booklet but he rushed off too fast. Ah well, at least I got to see him perform, it was a real honor!

Anyway, after he had left, I continued with my Sonic Chronicles pic and I must say, it was going extremely well! A few minutes later, we were shown a preview of Sonic Shorts 6! They were hilarious! I also felt honored to be one of the first to see it and it was totally worth it! Can't wait for the full thing.

So after that I spent more time on my Sonic Chronicles pic, much longer this time and then they showed us a special of The Sonic Show, Red Hedgehog and the creators were there! Ah it was also hilarious, I loved the "What would the next Storybook Sonic game be?"

I went back to drawing after that and then a person dressed in a Sonic costume came around! I immediately ran to have a photo taken and I also got to shake his hand afterwards!

Then I spent a lot more time on my Sonic Chronicles pic and ended up adding Amy and Tails in and then inked it! That inking pen was so smooth, I want one! But when it was done I was really pleased and entered it into the fanart contest as well as my "Through The Fire" one. I just made the "Under 16's" category but next year, I think I'll be in the over 16's! It will be even harder to win now!

So then it was time for "The Sonic Hour" which was running late so we didn't do the full hour. But they did the cosplay contest! I felt kinda nervous going up to the front but there were I think 5 other people entering too so it was alright. I went up first in my Shahra costume and people cheered for me! It wasn't as loud as some other cosplayers but it felt good to be cheered. Anyway, there was me as Shahra, 2 Eggman's, a Silver, 2 Sonic's, a Purge (from Space Channel 5) and a Rouge. The finals were the 2 Eggman's and Rouge and Rouge won 1st place! I'm not suprised, her costume was epic! She got an XBox 360! The other prizes were epic too, prepared by SEGA their selves! Then they announced the fanart results. I didn't win but I'm still glad I entered, I was really pleased with my efforts and the winning entries were brilliant so I'm glad they won! They got some epic SEGA prizes too. Then they cut the Master Emerald Shrine cake and I hurried to get my slice! Lastly, they asked some special guests and staff a maths question and the winner received a hand drawn sketch from SEGA!

After that, it was all finished! I went to collect my fanart back, changed into my normal clothes and then went out. It was just such an epic experience, I can't wait for the SOS 10!

At the end of The Sonic Hour, we all turned to the Live Feed camera and shouted "We want Crush 40 at SOS 10!" I hope they come next year! They do know about SOS so I really have a good feeling that they might!

Well, there was my super awesome epic day! I had a wonderful time and am looking forward to attending SOS 10 next year!

Milkshake Live! My First Concert

A couple of weeks ago, I took my little sister to see "Milkshake Live! My First Concert" which was based off the Channel 5 Milkshake channel. It featured a lot of characters that I grew up with and used to watch when I was younger such as Noddy and Rupert Bear!

The costumes were really good, they looked like life-sized replicas of the cartoons and the voices were exactly the same as the ones from the TV shows. The real presenters were also there and they were very enthusiastic and I enjoyed how they made it appealing for young children.

The music was very good too, most of it was children's songs but with an upbeat tune, almost a jazzed up version of each piece. The songs were sung by either the characters or the presenters and they always got the audience involved such as getting them to sing along or do the actions.

The stage looked very nice too and progressed through out the show (The plotline was setting a concert up so setting the stage was done as part of the show). By the end, it had lovely flashing lights and a brilliant platform for the concert to take place on.

I have to say, I quite enjoyed it even if it was for little children, it was a walk down memory lane and I wouldn't hesitate going again! I highly recommend this for young children, they will love the audience participation and seeing their favourite characters come to life!

Mamma Mia!

For our friends birthday, me and Cheyenne went to see Mamma Mia! with her and our other friend!

It was a dazzling and stunning performance and I would enjoy going to see it again if I got the chance.

The costumes were great, especially the sparkling ones and the wedding outfits and each actor portrayed their characters extremely well. My favourite costumes were probably the ones that Donna and her friends wore when they were performing because they were so sparkly and brightly coloured which made the scene even more enjoyable to watch.

The set was brilliant and I loved the way it would turn around at certain points of the play. The trees in the background gave it a nice touch and the blossom that fell down towards the end was extremely touching. The final scene was were Sophie and Sky walked across a bridge into the moon and this had to be one of my favourite scenes. The bridge rose up as they walked across it and pale smoke that was supposed to represent mist flew around their legs. The moon rose as they got closer which looked dazzling. Another one of my favourite scenes was the disco scene because of the dancing and all of the flashing lights. The set was very plain and only really had the wall in the background but the dancing and lights made up for that. The bridge was alos raised in this part too which was nice to see.

The songs were amazing and made me want to get up and dance myself when they came on! Abba has some amazing numbers and it was nice to see how they arranged the music to make a whole musical. My favourite song had to be "Mamma Mia!" or "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme"

As I said before, the actors portrayed the characters superbly and I though that each were cast in a great way. hey all had different personalities which made the play even more interesting.

I truly enjoyed this performance and would recommend it to other people.

Work Experience

From February the 2nd to February the 13th I had the privilege to do my work experience at TAG which is a Graphic company in the city.

I learned a lot of interesting and exciting new things and I had a great time working there. The people were especially nice to me and helped me in the best ways they could so I got the best out of my placement.

I couldn't make it in on Monday and Tuesday because of the snow but on Wednesday, I learned about measuring and laying things out on Adobe InDesign which is what the company does when they are making letters or templates. I first laid out a simple template that my mentor, Samantha had shown me. I had to measure everything with a ruler and then put it into the computer and after, work out all the colours and images. After that, I was able to change the colours and the layout slightly so I could make a practice CV. I didn't finish it that day.

On Thursday I made a colour chart on Adobe InDesign which I had to do by mixing CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) into the colour board on InDesign and then make swatches for my chart. I also set out a letter template which looked very professional once it was finished if I do say so myself. I also made a mobile phone advert in InDesign.

On Friday I finished my CV by adding some of my art to it and then I made 2 CD covers. One for my music and one for all my work that I would be taking home from TAG. I also started making a movie premier poster using Adobe InDesign and Adobe Pohotshop with my art on it. I didn't get round to finishing it but my uncle, Jim who also worked there brought me some Photoshop tutorials that I started watching before the day ended.

After the weekend on Monday I brought one of my drawing from home and re-outlined it on Adobe Illustrator and then coloured it using a gradient before picking a background colour and titles. It took me the whole day because I had to adjust to using a pen tool and gradients.

On Tuesday I finished off my movie poster which turned out superb. I had to edit it a lot of times to make it perfect but I got there in the end. I resulted in calling my own movie "Unleashed" and there were lots of pictures that I had drawn around it, mainly of cartoons and animals.

On Wednesday my Uncle Jim became my mentor and he taught me how to make a credit card advert on Photoshop which I managed after much difficulty trying to adjust to the media.

The final days of work experience were drawing near and I grew sad but kept up the work. On Thursday, Jim got me a comic scan of Tom Strong and showed me a lot of tools and techniques to use for colouring and layers on Photoshop. It took me a while to get used to everything and I still forgot a lot of things but I got there in the end. I started colouring it but didn't get round to finishing it in that day. I also coloured a comic scan that my dad had drawn for his comic when he was 16. Jim helped me with layer effects but I did the colouring mainly by myself.

On my final day, Jim taught me how to change a real pictures colour whilst maintaining the original texture. I chose a tabby cat that I turned pink and blue with a star on it's head. I then put it on a forest background.

I was sad to leave that day, work experience was amazing and I really hope I can go back to TAG and visit again!

How To Make A Silk Screen Print

1: Place the screen on top of the paper with a stencil of your image underneath.

2: Place ink on top of the screen down one side and spread along.

3: Use a squeegee to push ink through the mesh back and forth.

4: Remove the paper to view your work and remove the stencil if not to be used again.

Tips and Information:
•The screen is made of a silk or nylon mesh over an aluminum or wooden frame.
•The stencil opens spaces to where the ink will appear.
•Textile items are printed on multi-colour designs using different stencils and screens.
•This technique was famously used by pop artist Andy Warhol

How To Make A Clay Sculpture

1. Scrunch up an A3 sheet of paper into a ball for the head and roll up half of an A3 sheet of paper for the neck. (Make sure it can slide on and off the stand)
2. Place them on a wooden stand and position them in a rough shape of your head.
3. Cover the paper with brown tape dipped in water to make it stick. Cove up all the paper and make sure there are no gaps.
4. Spread clay all over the paper, pushing it to make sure it’s not too thick and that it covers the whole sculpture.
5. Once covered, use wood to shape the sculpture, remembering to shape individual sections such as the eyes and nose.
6. Use extra clay to add on any missing parts such as ears and hair.

Edward Scissorhands

On the 14th of January 2009 we went to see Edward Scissorhands at Sadler's Wells.

The new production is set very differently from the original with entirely new elements. The biggest change would be that instead of a play, Matthew Bourne has chosen to make all characters mute and replace the speech with a fantasy dance on a dazzling set with magical music choreographed by talented Danny Elfman and Terry Davies. The dance is set in the modern era and follows the story of Edward Scissorhands, an unfinished lab experiment with scissors instead of hands. The dance also features a wide array of other characters such as the couple who look after him, their daughter, whom is Edward’s love interest, her rough and rowdy boyfriend and all the other local townspeople.

The main character, as the title suggests, is Edward Scissorhands who is a timid, young boy that has recently entered the small town. He seems to have a funny personality, such as in the scene where he enters the town, he falls in a bin but is also very cautious and hostile to people whom he sees as a threat. This is shown when he first meets the people of the town, he doesn’t know who they are and acts nervously around them, pointing his scissors in defense at anyone who comes too near. He is presented as a somewhat scruffy person as his clothes suggest but is very kind at heart. I really liked the characterization for all the characters and I think the actors did a brilliant job on their characters. Not only did they have the right personalities, they also had the right features and the brightly coloured costumes brought out the character’s personalities even more which was a needed effect since the characters don’t talk.

The costumes were designed to really bring out each individual’s personality. For example, Edward had dull and somewhat scruffy clothes on throughout the play which symbolizes the fact that he is an experiment. The girl that he loved wore a lot of pink and generally had a cheerleader’s outfit on which characterized her as a happy-go-lucky character who loves bright colours and is always cheerful. The Goth family, on the other hand wore almost all black, leather outfits which presented them as the darker side to the town.

The lighting changed throughout the film to set what time of day the scene took place in. For example, the first scene had no lighting except for a very bright single spotlight in the centre of the stage as it was set in a nighttime atmosphere. However, when the barbeque scene came on, the whole stage was filled with bright yellow lights that shone down on each character to represent the sun and daytime. I think the lighting was very cleverly done since it was used in a number of different ways: To set the scene, to show emotion and to represent the time of day.

The sets were one of my favourite parts of the dance as they were beautifully set up with wonderful items and bright colours. It is clear to see that it had taken a lot of time and imagination to come up with such wonderful sets. Each one was done differently to bring out the emotion of that certain scene. One of my favourite sets was the one where Edward and his love were dancing with the trees. It was an extremely plain set with barley anything on it but it really brought out the emotional depth of that particular scene. Simple yet beautiful. Another interesting scene was the first time we see the town in daylight. It was a very busy set with a lot of different objects. The houses were painted in bright colours and were on a slant which made them stand out. Another set I wish to talk about is the very first one, which was a graveyard and it is also seen as the final set of the dance. It was a dark scene and somewhat scary since the two saddest scenes of the play were set there. Again, it was very simple and only had a few gravestones dotted around the stage but it still seemed scary because of the lighting and the way the characters acted on the set.

The dances were especially good and very imaginative. Most of the dancing was done in partners with either the teenagers or the parents dancing to set the mood of the scene. The music was done very well and had a somewhat fantasy feeling to it, especially in the snow scenes. Each character also had their own particular style of dancing for example, the Goth boy danced in a very sexual and lustful was but on the other hand, the girl who Edward loves danced in a way that a cheerleader would and did a lot of leaps and turns whilst dancing.

I really enjoyed the performance because I think it was choreographed wonderfully and the dancers made it a worthwhile performance. The set design was done beautifully and the music gave it a magical touch. I would definitely recommend this dance to a variety of people, from young children who have wild imaginations to adults who still have the heart of a child. Edward Scissorhands by Matthew Bourne is not to be missed and I guarantee you will leave the theatre with a sense of magic and childhood memories from when your heart was set on your fantasies.
